Risk Without Regret: Thoughts On Life, Business, Freedom, & Happiness

Based out of Dayton, Ohio, Randy Johnson hosts a weekly podcast titled Risk Without Regret. The main goal of this show is to inspire and motivate you to follow your dreams, take more risks, build a business around your passions, and have no regrets along the way. Some episodes, I'll discuss a quote I came across and really dig in deeper for 10-20 minutes. Quotes that mean something to me, and I think deserve to be expanded upon to make you think about them more and how they can relate to you. The rest of the episodes will be more of an interview format. I'll bring guests onto the show that have an inspiring story to share about their journey. These might range from 30-90 minutes, and some may even pass the 2 hour mark. These amazing people will come from all walks of life and they bring insane amounts of wisdom to the table. I refer to all of my guests as risk takers. Individuals who didn't follow the typical path, they paved their own. They enlighten us all about how they started their business, or travel the world, or work from their laptop on a beach, or make 7-figures, or even just how their life experiences shaped them into who they are today. Some are more successful than others, but they all share the same mindset of taking risks, doing what they love, helping others, and living life to the fullest. Enjoy!

After reading that title, you must be thinking I'm crazy. How could someone be happy or grateful about losing a job? That sounds terrible! Well, trust me, so many good things can come from a negative situation like this.

Today marks four years of being free from the 9-5 mindset. It's crazy how fast time flies, but they say that happens when you're having fun, right? There are probable more than 13 reasons why I'm glad to be where I'm at but these are the main ones. Hopefully when you listen to this episode, you're able to think how this relates to you and your job and what changes you might want to make in your career or life. Enjoy!

Today's guest is <a href="http://michaelcarbone.ca" target="_blank">Michael Carbone</a>. He's originally from Canada where he went down the typical path of going to college and getting a corporate job. You know, just doing the standard 9-5 grind that so many people do. Everything seemed great from the outside, but inside, he was feeling unfulfilled. Unfortunately, most people stay in this position their whole lives and never make a change. But Michael was different.

He's going to share his story about how an Ironman race changed his life, how teaching others to win more at online poker was a gamechanger, why webinars are so lucrative, as well as using fear to force you to take more action in your life. And towards the end, he talks about traveling to Paris a few months ago... the day after the terrorist attacks. He elaborates on how that experience can relate to business, as well as showing you how fragile life is and why you should live your life to the fullest everyday.

Let's face it, distractions are everywhere. It's 2016 and you are flooded with social media, smart phones, movies, tv, etc. everywhere you go. It's extremely hard to block all of that out unless you lock yourself in a dark room with no connection to the outside world.

Ok, that's probably a bit extreme, but in this day in age, you must focus on what's important. To do that, you have to discipline yourself. Remove everything that distracts you as best as you can. I took the tv out of my bedroom and cancelled my Netflix. That's a start and it was something easy to let go of.

So what are your big goals? What do you want to accomplish with your time in your life? What's the one thing you need to focus on that will get you there? Go do that one thing. Today. Right now.

I love it when people reach out to me about being on the podcast, which is exactly what this episode's featured guest did. Fat Tony is a 33 year old freelance photographer and entrepreneur from Long Beach, California. [05:50] Did you go to college for photo/video?

<blockquote>I realized that the designer sits at a computer all day and a photographer travels the world and does a bunch of cool shit.</blockquote>

<blockquote>I got a taste of this lifestyle, of this freedom, and world travel, and adventure. That was really what made me think, eventually I want to have a life more like this.</blockquote>

<blockquote>I definitely got bit by the travel bug when I was at the job because I was getting paid to do the traveling.</blockquote>

<blockquote>If you don't know what the ingredients are, don't put it in your body.</blockquote>

<blockquote>I basically learned on the job which was great because I was getting paid to hone in my skills and become better at this.</blockquote>

[31:25] What did that feel like on your last day of your job to quit and go on your own?

<blockquote>I don't want to change these things about myself. This is who I am. I'm proud of this. This is what I think is right for me.</blockquote>

[37:45] Did you go straight into freelance right after you quit?

<blockquote>When you're pretty good at a lot of things, it's hard to release some control and trust other people.</blockquote>

<blockquote>I needed to work with people on a more regular basis than just sitting in my condo by myself.</blockquote>

<blockquote>Having a partner not only helps keep me sane, it helps me push myself further, and it gives me another creative eye to help look at the stuff that I might oversee. It also gives me more ideas, plus it's a lot more fun to work with somebody than alone all the time.</blockquote>

<blockquote>I've definitely had interactions with people that have followed my personal Instagram and have been inspired to make positive changes in their lives just because I set a good example that they can follow.</blockquote>

[59:55] Do people always tell you that you're "living the dream?"

<blockquote>Yes, this is my dream, but if you have your own dreams, then it's up to you to make it happen.</blockquote>

<blockquote>You can have everything else you need, but if you don't have the mindset to make it happen, then you're going nowhere.</blockquote>

<blockquote>If there's something ingrained in you that is holding you back, you need to do a little self-analysis on yourself to figure out why you're like that, undo that, then change that about yourself.</blockquote>

[1:02:30] What inspires you?

[1:04:10] Is there anything unique about what you do?

<blockquote>I accel at telling those stories and I accel at that quick workflow that allows me to deliver the product faster than just about anyone else.</blockquote>

[1:06:20] Were there things you had to give up early on to get to where you are now?

<blockquote>I had given up so much, and didn't even realize it, to have a full-time job.</blockquote>

[1:07:25] Any fears you had back then or now?

<blockquote>It was hard for me to give it up because it was what I knew and what I loved.</blockquote>

<blockquote>Leaving the full-time job? Not so much. But making a full transition to a different industry was a big fear.</blockquote>

<blockquote>There was definitely an ego component to it where I enjoyed having a certain status, I enjoyed people knowing who I was. And nowadays that I'm making that transition, I don't really care if people know who I am.</blockquote>

<blockquote>I want to do the work that inspires me and that energizes me and that leads me to my goals, but I don't necessarily need to be the face of the work. I'm happy enough now letting the work speak for itself.</blockquote>

[1:12:05] Any mastermind groups or mentors in your life?

<blockquote>It's so easy to have self-doubts. But maybe that's a good thing because maybe that means you're pushing yourself.</blockquote>

[1:14:40] Where did the name Fat Tony come from?

[1:16:45] Has there been a moment that stands out that really makes you proud to do what you do?

<blockquote>I think the biggest compliment you can ever get is for somebody to say that you've inspired them.</blockquote>

[1:20:45] Is being an entrepreneur easier if you're single?

<blockquote>This is cool and I'm appreciative, but even though I'm here and doing these things, I'm lonely.</blockquote>

When it comes to being happy, you really need to do things you love. People always say, "Follow your passion." While I believe that and agree, I think there's more to it than just that. In this short episode, I break down this quote and explain how it relates to me, and how you should think about it this way... "Find three hobbies you love: one to make you money, one to keep you in shape, and one to be creative."

A Facebook friend of mine, Jason Reaves, reached out to me about a month or so ago. He actually initiated a group message on Facebook which also included Joshua Santos, a person I was not familiar with. On today's episode, I dig into this quote: "Everyone wants to be successful until they see what it actually takes." It's true, we all want to be successful, but in reality, only a handful of people really want to put in the work. The work that goes on behind the scenes.

Most people just see someone's "highlight reel" and consider everything they've done an overnight success. It's almost never the case. Ever. There are early mornings, late nights, skipped meals, mood swings, working on vacation, missing parties, blood, sweat, tears, and more. But these things usually aren't published for the world to see.

People also have a bad habit of attributing success to luck, which also isn't usually the case. Unless you define luck the way I do: "Luck is where preparation meets opportunity." If you spend your life working your ass off, consistently cruising down the path towards your goals, you will undoubtedly run into some pretty amazing opportunities. When these opportunities come knocking at your door, you'll be ready and you'll accept them with open arms. You prepared for them, you were not quote unquote lucky.

So the next time you see an instagram post of someone jetsetting across Europe, or stoked about all these new clients they are booking, or how insanely happy they are to be getting paid for doing work they love, don't roll your eyes. There are years of hustling and grinding it out that they aren't posting about. But I guarantee you, if you ask them what their key to success is, they will say things like: patience, putting in the work, consistency, positive habits, exercise, research, taking action, setting huge goals,

We live in a world of distractions, but if you can stay focused, you'll accomplish more things than you can imagine.

I think we all tell ourselves what we are going to do in 5 years, or 20 years, or before we die, but we totally forget that tomorrow is not promised. Tomorrow, as in less than 24 hours from now. So with the 24 hours that you might have laid out in front of you, you should be doing everything you love in life. Work on projects that you're passionate about, travel more, spend time with people you love, start that business, write that book, record that song, whatever it is, do it, and do it now.
