Risk Without Regret: Thoughts On Life, Business, Freedom, & Happiness

Based out of Dayton, Ohio, Randy Johnson hosts a weekly podcast titled Risk Without Regret. The main goal of this show is to inspire and motivate you to follow your dreams, take more risks, build a business around your passions, and have no regrets along the way. Some episodes, I'll discuss a quote I came across and really dig in deeper for 10-20 minutes. Quotes that mean something to me, and I think deserve to be expanded upon to make you think about them more and how they can relate to you. The rest of the episodes will be more of an interview format. I'll bring guests onto the show that have an inspiring story to share about their journey. These might range from 30-90 minutes, and some may even pass the 2 hour mark. These amazing people will come from all walks of life and they bring insane amounts of wisdom to the table. I refer to all of my guests as risk takers. Individuals who didn't follow the typical path, they paved their own. They enlighten us all about how they started their business, or travel the world, or work from their laptop on a beach, or make 7-figures, or even just how their life experiences shaped them into who they are today. Some are more successful than others, but they all share the same mindset of taking risks, doing what they love, helping others, and living life to the fullest. Enjoy!

If someone comes to me and says they want to own their own business someday, but they have no skills and they have no idea what to do, the first thing I ask them is, "Do you enjoy being on a computer for long periods of time?"

If they say no, I think they should be trying as many new things as possible to see what sticks and what they enjoy doing. Almost anything can be monetized at some point. But if they say yes, and they also say they are pretty tech-savvy, I instantly tell them they should learn web design.

Once they start going down the web design path, they are going to have a million questions. And one that comes up often is: is it cheating for a web designer to be using themes/templates on client sites, or even their own website?

It really comes down to who you ask, what their background is, and what type of business they are trying to run. My short answer is: you should definitely be starting every website with a premium theme.

Hit play on this episode to learn more about why I feel strongly about this, and how this couldskyrocket the amount of clients you get, as well as increase the amount of money you make.

Over the years, I've learned a thing or two when it comes to web design and running a business based around it. If you have any interest in this space, definitely listen to this one, it might open up your mind to new possibilities.

Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms out there. I use it constantly, and I have way too many accounts, more than any sane person should be able to handle.

Hashtags are at the core of this app/tool, and it's a way for other people to find you and your content. But there are rules. And the rule is, no more than 30 hashtags, because people always abuse things like this, so they had to put a limit on it. But there's a loophole...

In this episode, I talk about how I stumbled across this hack and how simple it is to do. This should be a quick way to start getting some new people finding your posts and following you as a result.

Hopefully this is something you never knew about and I was able to teach you a new trick. If so, I'd love to hear how it has helped to grow your IG account and also if you have any other hacks that others might not know about, yet!

I hope you loved this episode, and if you did, be sure to subscribe to the podcast and leave a quick review! And of course, share it with anyone else that might get value from it.

On this week's episode, I discuss a great quote from the book I'm currently reading called Essentialism. Here's the quote:

Only once you give yourself permission to stop trying to do it all, to stop saying yes to everyone, can you make your highest contribution towards the things that really matter. -Greg McKeown

These days, everyone seems to be overwhelmed, including me. I take on too many projects and it's easy to get stressed out by trying to do everything.

Fortunately, there's a way out: essentialism.

No it's not always going to be easy, but it is very simple. Figure out exactly what you want to do and where you want to be, and eliminate everything that isn't essential to reaching those goals.

Getting rid of all the non-essentials allows you to completely focus on the one single priority that is the most important right now. And that's how you'll learn how to work better and put your energy in the best place possible.

So give this short episode a listen and hear my thoughts on this awesome quote. Enjoy!

On today's episode, I have Terry Gremaux joining us from Dallas, Texas. Terry is one of the leading social media trainers in the entrepreneurial space, as well as the author of a book that will help you Develop a Mind-Blowing Daily Routine and Create Your Dream Life.

His story actually starts in a small town in Montana, and at one point he was living paycheck to paycheck. After going through several failures along the way, he finally figured out a system that worked for him. It worked so well that he was able to increase his revenue by over 10x in just a few years!

During the call, Terry also shares a few tips that anyone can use to grow their audience on Facebook. Simple things that you can start taking advantage of today. And of course he brought a ton of inspiration with him, so I know you'll get value from this episode.

But I don't want to give everything away in the intro, so I'll let him explain it all. And with that being said, here's my conversation with Terry Gremaux. Enjoy!

I hope you loved this episode, and if you did, be sure to subscribe to the podcast and leave a quick review!

Best quotes from this episode

I just wanted more. I wanted to control my life. I wanted to have freedom. I wanted something that I've never seen anybody in my family have.
I'm very, incredibly introverted at the heart of me, and that obviously held me back in business for awhile. But I just learned to pick my spots. I've learned to do things that I have to do to win. That doesn't mean it has to be comfortable.
At the end of the day, I had to change dramatically to have what most other people will never have.
You can either believe that life happens to you or life happens for you. And I just choose to believe that life happens for me.
Shitty stuff happens to you to make you stronger and make you become better.
At that time, I didn't have the vision I have today. I just wanted to be something different.
I believe that every decision happens in a moment.
You're always gonna get what you tolerate. -Tony Robbins
If you want something better, if you want a better life, if you want that business of your dreams, if you want all of that, you have to change what you tolerate and you have to change your priorities in life.
When you have the right mindset, you're not gonna win every battle, but you're gonna win the war.
The hardest thing to put money into is yourself.
Knowledge is not power. Applied knowledge is power.
Investing in yourself, through any mechanism possible, is not a choice, it's a priority. You have to make that a priority in your life or you just won't win.
The way you treat money is the way you'll receive money.
A coach isn't there to hold your hand and get you out of bed. That's not what they're for. A coach is there so you can use their wisdom to point you in the right direction so you don't make the same mistakes.
Social media is about attention.
This day in age, there's no real new.
How can I disrupt attention?
Social media is not a place to sell, so don't treat it like that. It's just a tool to get somebody on your email list.
In entrepreneurship, we need to be our biggest critic. We have to be hard on ourselves. But we have to be our biggest forgiver as well, because we're gonna mess up every day.
If you build relationships consistently, it makes life a heck of a lot easier.
You see these people build these businesses and it looks like it happened overnight, but they've really been building relationships their whole life.
Embrace the challenges, because they're gonna happen.
Business is hard. It's the hardest game you'll ever play.
With entrepreneurship, there's a lot of risk involved. But anything with a lot of risk always comes with amazing rewards.

Top 50 quotes

The business kind of led itself to the next thing at all times. I'm not some kind of genius. I think I made some smart moves along the way that made us what we are, but it kind of unfolded itself. It's like a paper airplane, you just kind of keep unfolding each wing and it keeps going. -Brandt Fuqua
Any effort you put in early I think is coming back to you tenfold later. I believe that without question. But there's always a cost. Whether it's your time, your freedom, your social life, personal possessions, monetary value, whatever. We lived like we were poor for quite a few years just so we could be able to do some of the things we've done in the recent years. Some people don't know our full story, or they forget that we struggled all that time or didn't have things, so now that we have things it's like you're an overnight success. And that does happen, but not to many people, and it didn't happen to us. -Brandt Fuqua
I don't feel guilty about sharing some of my successes in life, whether it be the equipment or the cars, or whatever, it's not a bragging thing. If it inspires even one person to go out and creates a business, even if they fail, if they give it a shot, I think that's worth it. If there aren't people out there showing you what you can do from nothing, there's not a lot of motivation for some people, they need to see the result. -Brandt Fuqua
If you're not making it happen, then you don't want it bad enough. -Zephan Moses Blaxberg
You really have to go after the things that you enjoy doing. We don't have enough time on this earth to do the things that we don't like doing. -Zephan Moses Blaxberg
With the limited time you have in each and every day, who you surround yourself with is the biggest thing you can control that makes the most difference in your life. -Mike Alexander
It's not doing what you love if you're still chained to a desk. -Mike Alexander
There are ways to do your own thing and make your life different than what it is. There's a middle ground between staying at something you hate doing and quitting everything to chase what you want. There's a lot of play between those two things that people can do, and those options don't seem to be talked about a lot. -Eric Zimmer
I don't see working for a big company as job security. Having skills that I know I can apply in a lot of different places and continuing to have connections, I see that as job security. I'm confident I can go find some way to make money with the skill set I have. I have no faith that Fortune 100 company “X” is any safer than being out on your own. -Eric Zimmer
All the monthly payments were really killing us, and to be honest, we didn't even know how much we were spending on everything. We realized what's stopping a lot of people of traveling full time, including ourselves back then, is oftentimes a belief that they don't have the money. But it's just that, it's just a belief. Or they organize their life in a certain way and now they're stuck paying every month for stuff that in the end they don't really need. They'd rather travel than have cable TV, but they have cable TV because they have a TV and it's just convenient, which is the normal thing to do. So now we second guess every financial decision we do, because we're like, do we pay for a better flight or do we spend more money on that meaningless thing. And oftentimes, we choose the better flight. So really it's just our priorities have evolved a lot. -Nick & Gen
When you do stuff differently, even though this is not what you're doing, you're questioning other people's lifestyle. They feel like you're challenging what they're doing. And they don't feel comfortable just because you're doing something different. Which doesn't make any sense because it doesn't apply to their life. This is why you sometimes get negative feedback to these kinds of decisions because people just want to feel normal and feel like they're doing the right thing. -Nick & Gen
When you get rid of a bunch of stuff, there's definitely this huge sense of freedom that you just can't get anywhere else. -Trevor Gay
Without a doubt, I think that just seeing those goals in front of you when you wake up and when you go to sleep are powerful. And it's not magic, it's just literally seeing your goals everyday and that's a simple reminder of what you're working towards. Ask yourself, “Have I done anything today to work towards that goal?” And if you say no, well, there's your motivation right there as soon as you get out of bed. -Trevor Gay
Taking care of yourself regardless of your dietary choice is probably one of the most important things you could do in life period. -Trevor Gay
One of my missions in life is to just wake people up, shake them up a little bit, and make them realize that you could be gone tomorrow. This is it. You have two decisions: become great and continue to do that, or sit on the couch and be forgotten. -Joshua Santos
The ones who look weird to the world and society, those are the guys that I want to stick around with. -Joshua Santos
It's so easy to have self-doubts. But maybe that's a good thing because maybe that means you're pushing yourself. -Fat Tony
If you calculate the risk, then you're probably not gonna have many regrets. -Fat Tony
I hired someone that knew what they were doing to help me and teach me what I needed to do. Then I put in a ton of work, and I'm getting results. -Michael Carbone
When people think I'm crazy, that's when I know I'm doing something right. -Michael Carbone
Even if you have the most basic knowledge, you shouldn't take it for granted. There's always people who don't know anything about that topic or are just new to it. So you can always find an audience of people who want to learn more. -Michael Carbone
I'd rather be great at a couple things than good at everything. -Kolby Kolibas
Who you know will get you there, what you know will keep you there. -Kolby Kolibas
Risk is just being able to embrace uncertainty when you're going to make a decision. And there are very few decisions that we make that don't have some amount of uncertainty involved. -Kayt Sukel
Success to me isn't just about making money, it's about carving out a life for yourself that has wealth in all aspects of it. -Kayt Sukel
It all comes down to creating quality content and figuring out how you can get that content in front of as many people as possible (the right people) to the point where it actually makes an impact in their life first. Just give incredible value to the point where they're willing to give you an email address, they're willing to buy your stuff & do business with you, and to really scale that. -Geoff Woods
You need to figure out what you're passionate about. You need to surround yourself with people who inspire you, who are already doing what you want to be doing, what you could only hope one day to have the opportunity to do. And when you surround yourself with those types of people they end up opening your eyes and showing you ways that you can do things that you never thought you could do before. -Geoff Woods
It took getting everything I thought I wanted to realize that everything I ever wanted wasn't actually what I wanted at all. -Joshua Fields Millburn
I don't have a college degree at all and I've never taken a writing class. The reason I started teaching a writing class online was because a lot of people kept asking me a ton of questions about writing. -Joshua Fields Millburn
The path that I was on was leading me to a place that I didn't want to be. And so, the bigger risk for me would be staying. -Joshua Fields Millburn
Planning on paper is very different than implementing it in real life. -Zombie Dogz
It's a big leap and it's scary but you just gotta do it. You gotta commit, just like anything in life. -Zombie Dogz
You gotta be willing to work. You gotta be very self-disciplined when you're self-employed. And when you're carving your own path, that's probably one of the hardest parts. -Andrew Norelli
Accept that life happens and don't let things side-track you. -Andrew Norelli
Something you love doing, something people will pay you for, and something that you're good at. Where those three areas intersect, that's where you can build a business. -Tucker Max
If you want to start a business, the easiest thing to do is find a problem that is really painful to people. Then create a solution that they will pay for. -Tucker Max
I'm young, I'm ambitious, and if I fail, and it doesn't work out, oh well, at least I tried. And now I know what doesn't work and I can learn from that. But if I never tried, I didn't want to look back ten years from now and say I wish I would have followed my heart and pursued my passions. -Jake Kelfer
A lot of people still don't understand why I'm doing what I'm doing, but that doesn't mean they're correct. That just means they don't understand yet. -Jake Kelfer
I think that for me, working on one thing solely is ineffective because I will choke it to death, I will worry about it, I'll obsess on it. Whereas, if I have multiple things going, I can work on whatever feels best in whichever company, and I don't worry as much. -Andrea Lake
If you can't make your business work with a few thousand dollars starting out, it's probably not going to work, and more money isn't the answer. -Andrea Lake
The day that you launch your website is the worst it's ever gonna look, because you're going to improve upon it from there. And then we extended that out and said, the day that you launch any business is the worst that that business is every going to be. So stop waiting until everything is perfect. -Andrea Lake
I can tell ya, when you get it working and you realize how free a person you can be, it's absolutely intoxicating. There's actually an adjustment period to get your head around the fact that you can basically do whatever you want. -Pete Sisco
I've never met anyone who doesn't have a skill, an ability, or at the very least a passion that can't be of service to somebody who would be happy to pay money for it. -Pete Sisco
If you had all the money that you ever needed, if you were 100% debt-free, and you had money in the bank that was going to last you for the rest of your life, you just didn't have to think about it, what would you do? What would you want to do every day? -Pete Sisco
The talents are natural, the skills come from repetition. But you have to do the work to get the skill. The talent is something that you're just naturally good at. But ironically, you won't figure out if you're naturally good at it until you do it. -Maj Toure
What I do on my social media is, I make little motivational videos. The general public thinks that's for them. It's not. I use it for me at times when I'm down to keep myself motivated. It's like my future self talking to my present self. -Maj Toure
We didn't realize it at the time, but the fact that we spent so many years living below our means, not having any debt except for the mortgage, and paying down the mortgage, that's what enabled us to build Goat Milk Stuff so quickly. -PJ Jonas
I wasn't going to let someone else or their experience tell me what I could and could not do. I don't let other people's reality impact my reality. -PJ Jonas
I think the best entrepreneurs in the world are those that can remain mentally, spiritually, and emotionally peaceful even in the midst of chaos. -RJ Hodges
There's no way that you can keep talking about a thing and you don't finally at some point take action on it. Because when you have a deep-rooted desire, it will not let you rest. -RJ Hodges

Most of the successful people I follow or have read about usually have a specific morning routine that helps them accomplish more or increases their happiness throughout the day. In this episode, I explain what I'm currently doing during the first couple hours of each day.

Plus I also talk about the one big thing that gets me out of bed right away almost every single day, no matter how tired I feel.

I'm not perfect, so every day isn't exactly like this, but for the most part, I try to do these things as much as possible when I'm at home.

When I stick to this routine, I start the day on fire and continue throughout the day with that positive momentum.

If you're struggling with getting started in the morning or you're always feeling sluggish, listen to this short episode and also check out the books I recommend below. Enjoy!

I read somewhere that the average adult makes around 35,000 decisions a day. Think how stressed out you'd be if you were indecisive about all of those!

I'm a very indecisive person, and sometimes I just have to force myself to make a decision and move on. In most cases, even if it turns out to be the wrong choice, it's not the end of the world.

In this episode, I dig into this quote: "Be decisive. A wrong decision is generally less disastrous than indecision." -Bernhard Langer

These days, there are so many options for everything. We are all overwhelmed. But if you treat decision-making like a skill, one that you can constantly practice and get better at, you're gonna reduce your stress level drastically.

The last thing you want to do is get stuck in the over-analysis paralysis mode!

Hit play and listen to this short episode all about taking action and moving on. Stop wasting your time worrying about every little detail. Make a few mistakes and learn from your real-word experiences. Enjoy!

On today's episode, I have RJ Hodges joining us. RJ is an inspirational speaker, entrepreneur, and certified life coach.

He is also a bestselling co-author of the book Mission Unstoppable, as well as the author of You Can’t Practice At The Game, The Art of Mastering You, Volume One. He says his philosophy of mastering yourself applies to bettering your overall relationships, self esteem, business, the way one perceives, and many other issues we all face daily.

The common strategy is to perfect those things that are external, but oftentimes it’s the internal relationship with ourselves that either hinders or allows us to thrive. In many instances our internal conflicts will stop us from going after our dreams and goals.

In this episode, RJ also explains the #1 thing about entrepreneurship that if neglected will kill you and your business. This conversation will definitely provide some insight to all entrepreneurs, even the aspiring entrepreneurs, or those with huge goals who are looking to take the next big step.

Plus if you listen all the way to the end, RJ has a bonus offer for everyone listening. Enjoy!

Best quotes from this episode

When you're young, nothing is about purpose. Nothing is about passion. Everything is about "how much money can I make?"
The 1-on-1 coaching, it allows me to be personable. I get the chance to give you the exact thing that you need.
Writing allows me to express not just messages that I want to get to other people, but it allows me to express the messages that I feel that are kind of going off in my head. It allows me to get those things out.
There's an inner voice that's always talking to us, that's trying to lead and direct our path. We're not always hearing that voice. But writing allows me to kind of just really sit down and pay attention to that voice and just kind of pour some things out and some expressions that a lot of times I think they're for me, they just happen to touch the other people as well.
It's something about you being you, that's what the world is looking for.
I don't have a problem with you modeling other people, but you can't model another person to the point where you become not authentically you.
I don't try to give you something that I haven't done. Everything that I talk about, everything that I teach is something that I've personally gone through.
How bad do you really want what you say you want?
There's a price behind everything that you want.
Everything that we ask for, we're not really prepared to do what's behind it in order to get there.
You've been in these particular conditions in your life simply because you're a direct contradiction to what you say you want.
If you look at most of us, we want one thing, but everything else about us (mentally, spiritually, physically, emotionally) is the direct opposite of the thing that we want.
I don't believe in wasting time.
If I can't change the way you see it, we probably can't change the way it is.
Results are results. You can't argue with results.
If you're going to do anything that a lot of people are doing, you need to first and foremost find your voice. How do you do this different? What particular problem or issue can you solve and for who?
Take what is and make it better.
Google gives me a window to the world.
I'm really big on maintaining a level of peace within myself.
I think the best entrepreneurs in the world are those that can remain mentally, spiritually, and emotionally peaceful even in the midst of chaos.
There's nothing like seeing a person transform.
There have been other people I've not had the privilege to meet personally that I consider mentors.
A principle is only as good as the person that it comes into contact with.
If I don't learn to take care of me, then I am of no good for anybody else. I can never give what I don't have.
Before we can get you to where you're going, we first gotta locate where you are.
If I told you that you weren't going to make money for the next two years, would you still pursue this?
When you stop chasing money and you start chasing passion and purpose, the money just seems to chase you.
I'm going to do it because I love it and because it's the only thing that moves me.
Once I got introduced to the world of entrepreneurship, I've never been the same since.
It's funny how randomly losing your job motivates you. Everything that you don't think you can do, you figure out a way to do it.
When I think about "Risk Without Regret," I think about life and how we play life so safe sometimes.
Sometimes we play life so safe that when we look back we ask ourselves, "why didn't I do that?"
You're not getting out of this thing alive. You're not going to get a second chance at this life.
Calculated risks are very important in life.
There's no way that you can keep talking about a thing and you don't finally at some point take action on it. Because when you have a deep-rooted desire, it will not let you rest.
The reason most people don't act on a desire is because it's too big for them at the moment. Not understanding that you only see a vision from its end result.
I may not be able to fulfill this entire vision today, but what can I do today.
When you initiate, direction comes.
Sometimes we neglect the baby steps and the growth process.
I think the entrepreneur life has some sacrifices. There are some things that you're gonna have to do that the next person is not willing to do.
The reward is going to feel so much greater than what I feel right now.
Win at life, don't just survive.
If it's not going exactly the way you want it to go right now, don't quit. Don't give up because every great person that has reached anything, they have a dark story somewhere.
I have not found one extremely successful person to where I couldn't dig somewhere in their past and find something that they went through.
The beautiful thing about when you come out of something and it's great and you get everything that you ever desired, you don't even remember how painful it was before.
I remember that feeling of not knowing what's next. And sometimes I take myself there because I never want to put myself in that position to where somebody else is able to dictate my life in that way. And that keeps me pushing every single day.
It's a little bit difficult in the beginning, but if you fully turn this page, there's always something better coming.
Any doors that have ever closed in my life, no matter how hard they were, the next door that opened was so much better. It was 20 times better.
