Risk Without Regret: Thoughts On Life, Business, Freedom, & Happiness

Based out of Dayton, Ohio, Randy Johnson hosts a weekly podcast titled Risk Without Regret. The main goal of this show is to inspire and motivate you to follow your dreams, take more risks, build a business around your passions, and have no regrets along the way. Some episodes, I'll discuss a quote I came across and really dig in deeper for 10-20 minutes. Quotes that mean something to me, and I think deserve to be expanded upon to make you think about them more and how they can relate to you. The rest of the episodes will be more of an interview format. I'll bring guests onto the show that have an inspiring story to share about their journey. These might range from 30-90 minutes, and some may even pass the 2 hour mark. These amazing people will come from all walks of life and they bring insane amounts of wisdom to the table. I refer to all of my guests as risk takers. Individuals who didn't follow the typical path, they paved their own. They enlighten us all about how they started their business, or travel the world, or work from their laptop on a beach, or make 7-figures, or even just how their life experiences shaped them into who they are today. Some are more successful than others, but they all share the same mindset of taking risks, doing what they love, helping others, and living life to the fullest. Enjoy!

On this episode, Eric Zimmer explains how he has always had the entrepreneur mindset. From a paperboy to owning a small landscaping company to working in various small startups to starting his own companies and so much more.

But all that could have been cut short as he developed a nasty drug problem early on. Luckily for him, he was able to kick that habit and create a lot of success for himself!

At the beginning of 2014, he launched The One You Feed Podcast, and by the end of the year, he was voted one of the Best of iTunes Podcasts of 2014. But it doesn't stop there, he also does e-commerce consulting for large businesses on huge projects.

I'm excited to share this story with you today, I think you're really gonna find it motivating and relatable! So without further ado, here's Eric...

<strong>Show notes:</strong>

[00:45] Tell us a bit about yourself...

[02:40] Did you go to college for computer programming?

[05:00] Unqualified but did it anyway

<blockquote>When you're starting a company, you have to build what you can with what you have.</blockquote>

[06:00] Where do you live?

[06:45] How were you able to get sober?

<blockquote>I hit a point where I just had no idea what else to do. No idea of the next step, so I checked myself into treatment. Something happened in that period where I started to get a little bit of hope, that maybe I could live a different way. So I threw myself into that pretty hard, and that was really all I was focused on for at least a year and a half.</blockquote>

[07:40] Did family or friends or a mentor help you get through all of this?

[08:00] Tell us about your award-winning podcast...

<blockquote>An old grandfather told his grandson, "My son, there is a battle between two wolves inside us all. One is evil. It is anger, jealousy, greed, and resentment. The other is good. It is joy, love, hope, humility, kindness, empathy, and bravery." The boy thought about it, and asked, "Grandfather, which wolf wins?" The old man quietly replied, "The one you feed."</blockquote>

[09:30] What type of guests do you have on your show?

<blockquote>I interview anyone that I find interesting, who I think has something useful to say about how do we make good decisions. What do we think about and where do we spend our time, and that totally determines the quality of our life. And the show is focused on how can we do that better.</blockquote>

<blockquote>I didn't start the podcast to necessarily be a business. It would be good for me and i get to spend more time with my best friend. The fact that it blew up isn't the primary focus of why I'm doing it. It really started as a hobby more than anything else.</blockquote>

[11:40] What did you think of the Best of iTunes award?

[12:30] Talk about the solar energy biz you started...

<blockquote>The idea came from something I got interested in, I tend to follow my curiosity. I was at the library browsing around and saw a book on clean energy. I thought there was a great opportunity there and I thought that kind of work was really important.</blockquote>

<blockquote>I just hit a point where I didn't see the path forward from here, that I didn't think this was going to make me happy. So I just decided to change directions.</blockquote>

<blockquote>What's the point of owning your own company and doing your own thing if you're not enjoying it anymore?</blockquote>

[17:40] Started a non-profit at age 16...

<blockquote>It started when I just wanted to take some kids to the zoo, and it turned into something more. But my transition out of it was hastened by my problems with alcohol and drugs. So I sort of helped to kill that. That's certainly one of the regrets I have.</blockquote>

[19:20] Have you always had the entrepreneur mind?

<blockquote>If you can find someone who has a lot of credibility who will take you seriously, then to some degree you can leverage that credibility.</blockquote>

<blockquote>I think you're always projecting an image or you're selling something that's a little bit beyond where you are. There ends up being a gap between what you're out there selling and what you're capable of at that exact moment. The key is that you don't let that gap get too big that you can't jump it when you have to.</blockquote>

[23:15] Did you start the solar company right after you got sober?

[24:00] As the solar company was being put on hold, is that when you got into the e-commerce stuff?

<blockquote>There are ways at any juncture along your career that you can take risks and not expose yourself to complete ruin.</blockquote>

[26:40] How old are you? Is age a factor?

<blockquote>There are ways to do your own thing and make your life different than what it is. There's a middle ground between staying at something you hate doing and quitting everything to chase what you want. There's a lot of play between those two things that people can do, and those options don't seem to be talked about a lot.</blockquote>

[28:50] Do you think a regular job is secure?

<blockquote>I don't see working for a big company as job security. Having skills that I know I can apply in a lot of different places and continuing to have connections, I see that as job security. I'm confident I can go find some way to make money with the skill set I have. I have no faith that Fortune 100 company "X" is any safer than being out on your own.</blockquote>

[34:25] Your e-commerce biz doesn't have a name?

[37:30] How important is networking?

[38:40] What is more stressful, the larger or smaller projects?

[40:25] Tell us about the coaching and public speaking that you do...

[41:45] People come to you, you don't have to sell yourself as hard anymore...

[42:35] Do you travel much or is Columbus good for what you do?

[45:45] How did you meet Lewis Howes?

[47:05] What do you wish you knew before starting a biz?

<blockquote>A skill worth investing in is learning how to learn things.</blockquote>

[51:45] If you could only read one book, what would you recommend?

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1451639619/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1451639619&linkCode=as2&tag=riskwithoutregret-20&linkId=JHFQMLQE7HBUOAWV" target="_blank">The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change</a>

[52:40] What have you given up to start a biz?

<blockquote>There are definitely sacrifices. I think anybody that says there are not is probably not being honest, or is not real successful.</blockquote>

[55:35] Some people feel like they are stuck in what they have chosen for their life. What are your thoughts?

[56:35] Any daily rituals?

<blockquote>The president exercises probably nearly everyday, I cannot, with a straight face, say that I'm busier than him or that the stuff I have to do is more important.</blockquote>

<blockquote>Try replacing "I don't have time for that." with "I'm not prioritizing that right now." And once you do that, you really are making choices about your time.</blockquote>

<blockquote>If you want a different life, you make different choices.</blockquote>

<blockquote>I'm amazed at what I'm able to get done when I'm that laser-focused.</blockquote>

<blockquote>I think I've kinda become one of those people that a lot of people look at and go, "How on earth do you do that?" And I think you have to know how to work smart to do that.</blockquote>

<blockquote>We only have 24 hours, I can't manufacture any more. I have to think and be as disciplined as I can at what I spend my time on. And, while I'm spending that time, that I am using it well.</blockquote>

[01:05:25] Doing whatever you want to do everyday is harder than it seems...

<blockquote>The people that have nothing that they have to do or don't have any set schedule, they find it the hardest to be productive. Those are the people that tend to get the least amount done because there's just no structure of any sort, and it's just really hard to function in that.</blockquote>

<blockquote>A wandering mind is an unhappy mind.</blockquote>

[01:07:45] Who motivates and inspires you? Favorite interview you've done? Favorite quote?

<blockquote>A lot of times for me, inspiration, or feeling better when I'm down, comes from listening to loud music more than reading somebody's blog post.</blockquote>

<blockquote>I think that changing our ratio of what we create versus what we consume is a really great thing. I think a lot of us, we just consume and consume and consume. I found that I get a lot more out of slowing way down, consuming less, and actually learning it then applying it.</blockquote>

<blockquote>Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can. -Arthur Ashe</blockquote>

<blockquote>There is no substitute for starting the work. Plan the best you can, but just start.</blockquote>

<blockquote>If you have an idea, go find a customer and see if anybody would ever actually even want that thing.</blockquote>

[01:16:00] What is one moment that really makes you proud to do what you do?

[01:18:05] How does social media affect what you do?

[01:19:50] What skills should every entrepreneur have?

<blockquote>One way to not have regret about risks is learn how to take small risks, and do those often. Learn to take a risk and try, versus just thinking about it.</blockquote>

<blockquote>The old saying goes, "Ready. Aim. Fire." But I think a lot of entrepreneurs are a lot more like, "Ready. Fire. Aim."</blockquote>

<blockquote>I'm taking a risk, but I've got a lot of good information here telling me that this is a smart risk to take.</blockquote>

[01:22:45] What's a big risk you've taken?

<blockquote>The other way to take risks is if you get to the other side of it, are you gonna know a whole lot more than you know now? And is that going to make you valuable in other ways?</blockquote>

[01:25:50] Any cool companies that have caught your attention lately?

[01:28:30] Is that popular advice that you don't 100% agree with?

[01:30:45] Are you the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with?

[01:33:55] What are you working on next?

<blockquote>I think behavioral change has a lot to do with how you structure your life and the environment. There's a lot of studies, a lot of science, and a lot of best practice in trying to change habits that I just think most of us don't ever know.</blockquote>

The quote of the day is: <em>"My goals don't stop for anyone. Either you support me or I make it happen alone. Either way, it's going to happen."</em>

You will encounter many people in your life that will doubt you, hate you, make fun of you, or whatever. You need to ignore them, and move on. You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with, and if they are holding you back, it's time to cut them off. You will never reach your goals if you give into them. You need a stronger mindset. Reach your goals no matter what. If they don't want to support you and go with you on this amazing journey towards your success, then leave them behind, while you go on to do epic shit alone!

Sep 27, 2015

I've known who Mike was for quite some time, but we didn't connect with each other until a year or two ago when he approached me to build a website for him. Little did I know, this idea would turn into a big digital publishing company. And by big, I don't mean a massive office in Silicon Valley with hundreds of employees. He has assembled a team of freelancers and passionate individuals in the custom automotive scene from all over the world to crank out high quality content month after month.

Over the past year or so, <a href="http://slamdmag.com/" target="_blank">Slam'd Magazine</a> has built a huge following, and I know the recently launched <a href="http://liftdtrucks.com/" target="_blank">Lift'd Trucks</a> is setup to do the same in the coming months. It's pretty cool to see it all evolve even though I was hired to build these sites, so I may be a little biased. But from the perspective of a custom automotive enthusiast (which I have been for over 15 years), something new like this is exactly what our scene needs. Someone to push the envelope, put quality before anything else, and make the content easily accessible to the entire world.

I ask all the typical business questions, but I dug deeper and really pulled out some inspiring thoughts from this publishing veteran, things he never thought we'd discuss. Not only is he a very genuine person, but you really get a sense for his desire to help other aspiring entrepreneurs, as well as pave the way for generations to come in the automotive space. Even if you've known Mike for years, I think you're gonna learn a lot more about him here, and after you listen to the whole episode, you'll be so motivated that you'll probably reach out to him just to say thanks.

With that being said, let's get on with the show...

[16:00] So did you go to college?

[17:35] If you didn't leave your last job, would you still be working for someone else at another magazine?

<blockquote>If you do what you love, eventually the money comes.</blockquote>

[20:20] Where did the name come from for Rev'd, Slam'd, etc.?

[23:20] Why did you choose to go with a digital publication?

[33:55] Mike's sites: <a href="http://revdmediagroup.com/" target="_blank">Rev'd Media Group</a> / <a href="http://slamdmag.com/" target="_blank">Slam'd Mag</a> / <a href="http://liftdtrucks.com/" target="_blank">Lift'd Trucks</a>

[38:00] Do you have plans for the next magazine yet?

[44:15] Did you quit your last "real" job or were you fired?

<blockquote>I had to turn those job offers down because I didn't feel good about going back to that life.</blockquote>

<blockquote>It was very very scary. I will never be able to share that feeling in words.</blockquote>

[53:00] What motivates you to keep going?

<blockquote>The people you surround yourself with are everything.</blockquote>

<blockquote>With the limited time you have in each and every day, who you surround yourself with is the biggest thing you can control that makes the most difference in your life.</blockquote>

<blockquote>Your time is your resource, your time is your bank account, your time is everything.</blockquote>

<blockquote>Everybody has the same 24 hours in a day, not everybody uses them the same.</blockquote>

[58:00] Do you think you're more passionate about the cars/trucks now?

<blockquote>My passion now is to keep the spark alive in every other car person out there.</blockquote>

[01:02:30] What is one of your favorite business books or inspiring movies? <em>(<a href="http://www.riskwithoutregret.com/linchpin" target="_blank">Click here to see which book he picked...</a>)</em>

<blockquote>The #ranplan kind of struck a chord with me personally, because it's about doing what you want when you wanna do it.</blockquote>

<blockquote>Whenever you put a deadline, or schedule, or restriction on a human being's creativity, generally you're not gonna get the best product back.</blockquote>

<blockquote>I'm a firm believer in quality over quantity.</blockquote>

<blockquote>If you don't give your team the freedom to creative something great, you're hurting your business.</blockquote>

<blockquote>We all have something great that we need to share with the world, but so many people are afraid to execute.</blockquote>

<blockquote>Everything comes down to execution.</blockquote>

[01:13:25] Do you have any daily rituals that contribute to your success?

[01:15:40] What is a huge risk that you have taken?

<blockquote>Jumping off a cliff and building the airplane on the way down is just a daily thing for us entrepreneurs.</blockquote>

<blockquote>My entire idea of risk is 100% different than what it used to be.</blockquote>

[01:20:15] Some more inspiration from Seth Godin and <a href="http://riskwithoutregret.com/tribes" target="_blank">the Tribes book</a>.

<blockquote>Whatever you do, it all boils down to selling. No matter what your company is, you are a sales marketer.</blockquote>

[01:24:15] How do you make money from these magazines? Where is the revenue coming from?

[01:29:00] What life lessons have you learned from traveling around the country and the world?

<blockquote>We're all writing our own book. If you've only lived in one place, only seen one place, only been one place, then you've only written one chapter.</blockquote>

<blockquote>The traveling has really opened my eyes, and it really reminds you of just how small you are. Small, but not insignificant.</blockquote>

[01:34:45] Are there any specific moments from the past year or so that are humbling or make you proud to do what you do?

<blockquote>When I seen people getting tattoos of our logo, I knew we had created something bigger than ourselves. And that was a big moment for me.</blockquote>

<blockquote>Most other companies are bigger, and they have a marketing budget, but they don't have the passion as a line item or the creativity as a checkbox.</blockquote>

<blockquote>It was a big moment to see something I just saw in my head less than 2 years ago, on someone else's body, inked permanently. It was a very surreal moment.</blockquote>

<blockquote>You don't always get to hear you're right. But when my readers and my audience wear that shirt or get that tattoo or send a picture of their car in, that's them saying you're right.</blockquote>

[01:40:10] What have you given up to build this business?

<blockquote>You put a lot of time into building something, but when you build it for you, I believe you get that time back.</blockquote>

<blockquote>We gave up our savings account, our safety net, to put it into something we really believed in.</blockquote>

[01:45:55] Any business advice you don't really agree with?

<blockquote>It's not doing what you love if you're still chained to a desk.</blockquote>

[01:49:30] Have you always had the entrepreneur mindset?

<blockquote>Multi-level marketing is people feeding off the drive that most people have to want to do something for themselves, but they haven't found what it is.</blockquote>

<blockquote>A pyramid scheme or selling products for other people, in my opinion, that's just the same as getting someone else rich and not building your own company.</blockquote>

<blockquote>That same time and effort that you put into selling shit out of a catalog to your friends is the same amount of time you could be putting into building a company and something that you're proud of.</blockquote>

<blockquote>I feel like you've made it when you can pick and choose your clients.</blockquote>

<blockquote>The difference between freelancing and owning your own company that is successful is the ability to provide your service to a client who is a like-minded person who has the same quality about them.</blockquote>

[01:56:00] Have you had to turn potential advertisers away from your brand?

<blockquote>At this point, it's much easier for me to say no because I've found the right companies and the right companies have found me.</blockquote>

<blockquote>Your success always depends on the people you can keep, not the people you can get.</blockquote>

[01:58:30] What social media site works best for your biz and why?

[02:01:45] What skills should every entrepreneur have?

<blockquote>It's not as scary or intimidating as you think it is.</blockquote>

<blockquote>In reality, if you're good at what you do and you love what you do and you're passionate about what you do, you're in competition with no one, you can learn from everyone.</blockquote>

<blockquote>The people that ask the right questions to the right people will get the right answers.</blockquote>

<blockquote>It's refreshing, it's recharging when you take yourself back to that feeling that you had when you asked that same question.</blockquote>

<blockquote>It brings you right back to that instance, it snaps you back. Boom, this guy is exactly where I was at that time. I'm gonna take the time to give him the answer that I wish someone would have gave me.</blockquote>

[02:08:45] What is SEMA and how does it help your biz?

<blockquote>Instead of 2 million people seeing your product every month, wouldn't you rather 200,000 people who actually own custom cars, buy custom car parts, and are custom car fanatics see that same product?</blockquote>

[02:13:50] What's the best way to connect with you?

<blockquote>If you're a good person ,and you're grounded, no matter how big you get, that shouldn't change.</blockquote>

When I recorded my first episode about 5-7 weeks ago, I knew I wanted to immerse myself into the world of podcasting. I was so nervous to record that first episode, but I'm so glad I did. A couple weeks after that, I launched the Risk Without Regret podcast on iTunes and I was humbled by how many people around the world cared about it. As soon as the first few episodes went live, I knew I was going to do a recap of everything after the first month. Well, here it is.

I start the episode off with a couple books I am in love with (<a href="http://www.riskwithoutregret.com/steal" target="_blank">Steal Like an Artist</a> and <a href="http://www.riskwithoutregret.com/friends" target="_blank">How to Win Friends & Influence Others</a>), then I lead into some stats over the past month. I'm really excited with how well everything is going, which just fuels my passion for all of this even more. And almost daily, people are commenting about it, or sending me messages on Facebook, or sharing on Twitter, or calling/texting me about it. I try not to have any regrets in life, but if I had to have one, it would be that I wish I started all of this sooner. But here we are, one month in, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for the RWR podcast!

Also, be sure to <a href="http://www.riskwithoutregret.com/newsletter/">sign up for my email list</a> to get a daily dose of inspiration that you won't find on my social media accounts. It will make it easy for you since you won't have to come back to the website every day, it will be delivered right to your email inbox as soon as their is new content. Not to mention member-only content, coupon codes, and more. <a href="http://www.riskwithoutregret.com/newsletter/">Sign up here!</a>

<a href="http://www.riskwithoutregret.com/steal" target="_blank">Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative</a> - This is the latest book I've read and I highly recommend it, especially if you're a creative person like myself. Author Austin Kleon put together this easy to read manifesto about what it's like to be a creative in this day in age, and how nothing is original anymore. Stop trying to create the next Facebook out there. Find something you love, look at people doing things you want to do, study them, collect some of their ideas, and remix it with your style and personality. I finished this one in just a few hours, so you can easily digest this in an afternoon. <a href="http://www.riskwithoutregret.com/steal" target="_blank">Read more reviews here...</a>

<a href="http://www.riskwithoutregret.com/friends" target="_blank">How to Win Friends & Influence People</a> - I'm currently reading this book and it's hard to put it down. Every chapter makes me think about people in a new way. I need to stop thinking about just what I want, and think more about how I can help others while still getting what I want. No one cares what I want, and you should stop trying to get them to care. The tried and true advice in this book, from over 75 years ago, will help you think differently and change the way you treat others. This is one of the most recommended books among entrepreneurs all around the world. <a href="http://www.riskwithoutregret.com/friends" target="_blank">See why here...</a>

On this short episode, I talk about this inspiring quote I found: Always Deliver More Than Expected. I think more businesses should listen to this and really think of some quick and easy ways they can do more. These ideas will help them stand out from their competitors and literally cost almost nothing. But it can leave a lasting impression on the customer/client.

If your customer is surprised in a good way when you deliver something to them, they will become fanatical and want to tell everyone they know and post on social media about it, which could attract strangers to your brand, which could turn into customers. It's all about building brand loyalty and here are some ways. Enjoy!

In episode 5, I talk with <a href="http://<a href="https://twitter.com/zephanmoses" target="_blank">Zephan Moses Blaxberg</a> about his journey from working the typical 9-5 job, quitting the rat race, starting his own biz, hiring a coach, travel hacking around the country, and ultimately living a life of purpose. He runs a successful videography business and a podcast called <a href="http://www.yearofpurpose.com/" target="_blank">Year of Purpose</a>.

In the first few minutes of the show, I give a brief overview of some of his accomplishments, including working in the White House and on the set of House of Cards (ya, that one show on Netflix)! So hit the play button and learn more about this inspiring individual.

And be sure to read the rest of this post for the show notes, ways to connect with Zephan, links for people mentioned in this episode, and more. Enjoy!
